Since the 1970s, both authors have been involved in the school reform movement, sharing a passion for improving public education, particularly urban public education. Our experiences as teacher and professor in an urban magnet laboratory school reinforced our belief in the ability of all children to learn. Yet teachers from other schools in the district frequently told the magnet school faculty that their students were not "real inner-city poor children," and so their high achievement levels could not represent this population. This perception was refuted by three facts. First, the students were bused from all areas of the city. Second, at least 50 percent were entitled to participate in federal free breakfast and lunch programs. Finally, the student population was balanced racially and by gender. Therefore, "real inner-city poor children" populated this urban magnet laboratory school. Within the magnet school, the real difference was not who the students were, but rather how they were treated. Here, the students had a voice in choosing academic topics to study and selecting related activities to complete. Students were responsible for their own behavior. They were free to travel around the school and, at times, the college campus that housed the school. Teachers were certified, held master's degrees, and received updated inservice education regularly. Thus, we saw firsthand that these students from poverty-stricken homes could achieve at the highest levels when they were provided with appropriate preparation and excellent teachers. Not only did these kids learn, they wanted to learn!
